Ayurveda – Guduchi herb and it medical importance

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) is one such plant and among the most highly revered herbs of Ayurvedic medicine. Known universally as “Guduchi” (the one who protects), the herb is also known by different names across the sub-continent of India. Originating in India, guduchi is a tropical climbing herb that belongs to the Mernispermaccae family. It is now found not only in the tropical areas of India but also in Sri Lanka and Burma. The guduchi vine grows wild and does not require much cultivation. Guduchi is often found in the dry forests of India growing on large trees, particularly neem and mango trees. One of the defining characteristics of the plant is its green heart-shaped leaf.

Benefits:
 The plant oil is effective in reducing pain and edema and in gout and skin diseases.

 It benefits general weakness, dyspepsia, impotency, dysentery, secondary syphilis, tuberculosis, jaundice, constipation, leprosy, general debility, cutaneous rashes and condylomata.
 Guduchi helps in getting rid of renal caliculi and reduces blood urea level.
 The decoction of guduchi and sunthi is a good combination for treating gout and rheumatic disorders.
 Guduchi juice, when taken with cow’s milk or lodhra, is effective in combating leucorrhea.
 The juice is mixed with cumin seeds and consumed to reduce the burning sensation caused due to pitta.
 The root of guduchi is a strong emetic and used for bowel obstruction.

Home Remedies:
1)Fresh juice of guduchi (10 ml ) has to be mixed with equal quantity of honey. Consuming this mixture in empty stomach in morning help to reduce productive cough.

2) Crush few guduchi leaves and extract the juice.Mix it with pure ghee. Consuming this in empty stomach helps to reduce joint pains which arise due to arthritis of various kind.

3) The juice prepared out of giloy leaves and jaggery helps to relieve constipation.

4) Fresh juice of guduchi help to reduce fever and reduce drying of mouth.

5) A mixture of ginger juice and juice of tinospora cardifolia when taken in empty stomach help in amavatha (Rheumatoid arthritis)
