Chandigarh warms up to join Modi on Yoga mat

CHANDIGARH: On the second International Yoga Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead 35,000 people at a session in Chandigarh on June 21.

Nearly 185 centres are conducting free yoga classes and 5,000 students from Panjab University and other educational institutions will join him. Both Punjab and Haryana governments are mobilising 10,000 people each to be present at the Capitol Complex venue in Sector 1. Around 70,000 will do asanas at 185 locations.

The administration, which is spending Rs 8 crore on the programme, has roped in a Delhi-based company to build the main stage and other infrastructure. It has also floated tenders for ‘Made in India’ T-shirts, yoga mats, banners, water bottles, ang vastras and bags.

According to sources, the prime minister, along with 20 participants, will do yoga on the main stage, to be telecast on 40 LED screens in the complex as declared in ‘Mann ki Baat.’ For publicity, the administration has launched a website, a toll-free number (18001802072) and a Facebook page ‘International Day of Yoga 2016, Chandigarh’. A YouTube channel called ‘International Day of Yoga 2016 Chandigarh’ is also available for the people.

The chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana along with their Cabinet members are expected to take part in the event. Spiritual leaders Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the Dalai Lama and Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty are also expected to join. Meanwhile, Baba Ramdev has decided to hold a four-day yoga camp in the city from June 9.
