Griva Sandhigata Vata – Ayurvdic Tips for its cure
In Ayurveda Cervical Spondylosis is known as Griva Sandhigata Vata. A specific form of arthritis which attacks vertebrae and connecting bony and ligamental structures, if known as spondylitis. it is of three typs. The osteo-arthitic type of spondylitis is known as spondylosis. Frequently it occurs in the crvical vertebrae. the spines of majority of people above the age of 50 have certain degree of osteo-arthitic changes. But they seldom cause acute symptoms. Certain precipitating factors like trauma, incorrect posture of the body, pressure while sleeping and excessive intake of sour food, usually precipitate these attacks.
pain in back of neck and in shoulder and arms, stiffness of neck and even paraplegia occur due to this condition. the pain of the neck is generally aggravated by the movement of the spine. It is often associated with loss of memory and sleeplessness.
Any external massage is not of much use. Violent massage with deep pressure is very harmful for the patient. Only gentle massage over the muscle of the neck and shoulder joint should be applied and for this purpose the use of Mahanarayana Taila is best. This gentle massage can be done 2-3 times a day. In winter season, this medicated oil shouild be gently warmed before use.
Guggulu, gum-resin extracted from the plant is the best medicine for the treatment. A compound preparation named a Simhanada guggulu is popularly used by Ayurvedic physicians for the treatment of this problem. It is given in a dose of 2-4 tablets, four times a day. Usually hot water or hot milk is to be taken after the administration of this tablet. This medicine has a slightly laxative effect. bowels should move clearly and regularly for the recovery of this ailment.
At night some medicine should be given to the patient which will act as a purgative. Triphala powder is the best for this purpose. This should be given to the person, mixed with a cup of warm milk and one spoon of sugar.
Hot fomentation on the vertebrae of the neck is very useful. Rock salt of about 500gm should be wrapped in a cloth and should be warmed with the help of frying pan. This this should be applied over the neck. Care should taken to so that it is not too hot. Sometimes those suffering from Cervical spondylosis develop some anesthetic patches in the back, neck, shoulders and arms, because of the pressure from the nerve system. This makes the patient not feel the quantum of heat applied, therefore this should be done with special care. This process fomentation can last about half an hour every day. After fomentation the area should be covered with some cotton cloths to avoid contact with any external pressures like cold wind. It is suggested to undertake fomentation before going to bed so that the person does not run the risk of exposure.
- Bitter vegetables – Bitter Gourd, bitter variety of drumsticks, nem flowers.
- Wheat is better than rice.
- Sour things like curd.
- Fried things, pulses and other preparation of pulses.
- Refined Wheat – Maida and suji – Semolina.
- Avoid exposure to Cold, Cold bath, violent exercise of the neck muscles.
- maintain comfortable posture when reading or writing.
- If the pain is acute do not bend too much to put any pressure on the neck muscles and when the pain is acute ordinary head bath is to be avoided.
- Morning walk is suggested but if the weather is cold, protect the neck region from exposure.
