Ayurvedic Tips for Tonsillitis

Tonsils are the small rounded mass of mainly lymphoid tissue behind the tongue between the pillars or the faucis on either side of the pharynx. Its inflammation is called tonsillitis. In Ayurveda it is known as Tundeikeri. It usually occurs in young children. It is often associated with attacks of cold and cough. Constipation precipitates the attacks of this aliment.

The tonsils in the throat become red and swollen. The patient suffers from cough and pain in the throat. He experiences difficulties in swallowing food. Even breathing at times becomes difficult. In children it is often associated with fever. The tongue remains coated.

Treatment:

The patient should be given hot fomentation externally on the front side of the neck and effort should be made to keep it warm as long as possible. The bark of babula tree is very useful in this condition. The powder of yashtimadhu, vach and kalunjana are also used in the treatment of this condition. These three powders are made to a paste with honey and liked by the patient. This soothes the throat and cures inflammation.
Khadiradi vati is the drug of choice for the treatment of this condition it is kept in the mouth and slowly sucked as it gets mixed up with the saliva of mouth. In this way five to six tablets can be taken per day.
Persons suffering from chronic tonsillitis should be given Agastya rasayana to be taken in a dose of one teaspoonful, twice daily mixed with honey. It should be given to the patient for about six months. Even if there is no tonsillitis, the patient should continue to take the medicine which produces immunity against the future attack of tonsillitis.

Diet:

The patient can be given the soup of meat and pulses like moong and kulattha. He should be given methi, bitter gourd, patola and young radish.
One should avoid dry, hard and heavy food, all sour things, curd, milk and sugarcane juice.

Other suggestions:
• Sleep during day time is prohibited.
• Care should be taken to keep the bowels of the patient clear.
