Ayurveda – Pippali and its medical importance

Pippali which is referred to as long pepper, is widely used in India, and for some extent in Nepal and north of Africa as ingredient in their cooking, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.It has a taste similar to, but hotter than, that of its close relative Piper nigrum – from which black, green and white pepper are obtained. Other than just being a spice, Pippali has also got its own medical importance, in texts of Ayurveda. We shall look into the medical importance of pippali.

Medicinal Use:
Let us see how Pippali can be used for medicinal purpose –
Indian long pepper is used to improve appetite and digestion, as well as treat stomachache, heartburn, indigestion, intestinal gas, diarrhea, and cholera.It is also used for lung problems including asthma, bronchitis, and cough.Other uses include treatment of headache, toothache, vitamin B1 deficiency (beriberi),coma, epilepsy, fever, stroke, trouble sleeping (insomnia), leprosy, extreme tiredness,enlarged spleen, muscle pain, nasal discharge, paralysis, psoriasis, intestinal worms, snakebites, tetanus, thirst, tuberculosis, and tumors.
Some women use Indian long pepper during childbirth and during the 3-6 weeks following childbirth while the uterus returns to normal size. Women also use Indian long pepper to stimulate menstrual flow; to cause abortions; and to treat menstrualcramps, infertility, and loss of interest in sexual activity.

1)For Toothache:Take 1-2 gm of long pepper powder and mix with rock salt, turmeric powder and mustard oil.Apply this mixture on teeth.It cures toothache.
2)For Insomnia: Grind 1-3 gm powder of Long pepper root with sugar.You can also use double amount of jaggery indeed. Give this mixture twice a day.It cures digestion related disorders and results in sound sleep.This process is commonly administered in aged persons.
